Floods in Pakistan: at least one case of cholera

The UN confirmed on Saturday via one of his spokesmen, that at least one case of cholera had been registered in Pakistan, hit by the worst floods in 80 years, and announced greater efforts to treat people suffering from severe diarrhea.

"There are at least one confirmed case of cholera in Mingora, the main town of Swat district in north-eastern region, told AFP Maurizio Giuliano, spokesman for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs UN (OCHA).

"Given the concerns about cholera, a deadly disease, we have begun to do, instead of testing people, is to treat people against cholera," he added.

Mr. Giuliano said at least 36,000 people suffering from severe diarrhea.

"We are not suggesting that all those who suffer from severe diarrhea have cholera, but cholera is obviously a concern and that is why we are strengthening our actions to treat cholera," he said.

Pakistan has said that between 14 and 20 million people suffered directly or indirectly by the unprecedented flooding.

The United Nations says some 1,600 people died, Islamabad 1384 confirming death.
